With Pride Month being celebrated around the world, we thought there was no better time to dust off a little piece of history... 😏

Yep, that's our very own Andrew on the cover of OutRage Magazine back in February 1987.

Back then, shoulder pads were big, hair was bigger, and Andrew was rocking a hairstyle that sadly didn't survive the journey to 2026. As for that bright pink "lipstick" — it wasn't actually lipstick at all. It was the then trendy neon zinc cream that was supposed to be painted on his nose... but somehow ended up looking far cuter on his lips. 💋😂

While fashions may have changed over the years, one thing hasn't — the belief that everyone deserves to feel welcome, respected and accepted for exactly who they are.

𝐀𝐭 𝐊𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐊𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞. No matter who you are, where you come from, how you identify, or what your story might be. What matters to us is kindness, respect, and making people feel at home. 🧡

This week we had 3 customers walk through our doors all the way from Singapore… AKA the land of roti itself… and one of the very first places they wanted to visit in Sydney was us here at Kafe Kooks ❤️

Now honestly, that’s pretty wild when you stop and think about it.

Singapore is home to some of the best roti culture in the world, so for people from there to seek us out, sit down at our tables and enjoy what we do… that means more to us than words can explain.

What started as a quirky little “House of Roti” in Ultimo is somehow becoming a place people are adding to their Sydney food hit-list… and we honestly couldn’t be more grateful.

𝗢𝗞… so I’ve had a few people ask why the gift sent to me a few weeks ago (see the post from 6th May 👀) was addressed to “Loopy”…

Well, here’s the truth behind it…

“Loopy” was the name given to me many, many years ago — back in 1993 to be exact — after a night out in drag in Hong Kong as none other than 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮 💃✨

Yes… because she was my absolute number one supermodel.

And YES… I even got to tell her the whole story when I met her just a few years later 😅

Then, in true fashion, I gave drag another run on my very first trip to Bali in 1999… once again channeling Linda… and that pretty much cemented the nickname among certain friends as 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮.

So yes… the nickname stuck.

Funny how life works — from Hong Kong drag nights, to Bali adventures, to now creating something a little different and a little unique here at Kafe Kooks.

Maybe it proves I’ve always had a thing for doing things a little differently… and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Some stories never leave you… they just become part of who you are.

And apparently… so does the name Loopy 😏

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day 🌸

Today is Mother’s Day — a day to cherish the women who brought us into this world, raised us, guided us, and helped shape us into the people we’ve become.

My mum, Eileen, left this world many years ago, but not a day goes by where I don’t think of her.

When she passed, I was fortunate enough to be given back a Mother’s Day gift I had bought for her over 44 years ago when I was in high school.

To some, it might just look like a bowl.

But to me, it’s so much more.

I remember seeing it in a store some weeks earlier when Mum and I were out together, and I just knew she would love it. Back then, I had to ask Dad for the money and get him to take me back to the store so I could buy it for her.

It was a simple gift, but one given with all the love a young boy could have for his mum.

All these years later, this bowl has stood the test of time — just like the memories we hold onto.

Every time I see it at home, I think of Mum.

And I’m reminded that sometimes the smallest gifts become the biggest treasures.

To all the mums, step mums, grandmothers, mother figures, and those remembering theirs today — Happy Mother’s Day ❤️
