Soil erosion is a constant battle and Vetiver grass is proving its worth.

Planted on contour lines, its stiff stems help stop soil run off. Water build up behind the stems means more water is absorbed into the soil.

This versatile grass can also be used as fodder and animal bedding while roots can be pressed for oil - ideal as an insect repellent!

Farmer Support Centre recently assisted with the planting of 1000 Vetiver grass cuttings throughout 50 farms in the Huila region.

Fantastic and effective weapon in stopping erosion and retaining soil moisture.

The devastation COVID inflicted on the world has been horrific. For us it hit home in Colombia when we lost one of our own in July, Rodrigo Suancha Choconta. Rodrigo worked at our Volcafe La Sabana coffee mill in Bogota. He was recognised among his peers for his calm, friendly and helpful approach and his constant desire to learn. An inconsolable tragedy for his wife Anadelvira and their young children.

We wanted to make sure in some way Rodrigo was remembered. Our Volcafe colleagues tracked down a superb Cundimarca and printed a special bag with Rodrigo’s portrait and named the coffee Rodrigo Choconta Reserve. Coficom will be making a donation to Rodrigo’s family for every bag sold. We hope the bag adorns a few roastery and café walls around Australia and we remember Rodrigo Suancha Choconta.

Sometimes its easy to get swept up in the taste of coffee and forget about the difference that it can make to some people.

These beautiful smiling faces are students at the Chebelat Primary School. Our Sister Company Kyagalanyi Coffee are committed to stopping child labour and getting more kids back into school.

This in particular is part of their Farmer Support Services and is one of their social/special projects.

Raised bed drying allows greater circulation of air by keeping the coffee off the ground. It also allows for a more consistent coffee as the coffee dries evenly.
