Hey, Sydney. Ube is not a trend. It's a major food group (sort of π)
Comes in many forms. Iced, hot, cake, pancake, rice cake, champorado, brownie, pandesal, the only limit is your imagination, really.
So keep supporting Filipino cafes who have long been championing this humble purple 'yum' (pun intended!) π΅π

'April is Filipino Food Month Series, Part 2'
Respect to the early risers who put a lot of time & effort to make our kakanin even before the crack of dawn.
If you grew up in the π΅π, it was probably your lola or inay who brought you biko as pasalubong from her early morning trips to the palengke. She had bought it from the nice, old, quiet lady whose 'pwesto' was conveniently placed right before the tricycle station. Imagine all the hard work & discipline that went into getting all her kakanin ready. π«‘
Chef Jo is no stranger to early mornings and hustling before dawn.
So when biko is on rotation at Greenknowe, make sure to grab one. If it is not available, apologies, Chef Jo's siko πͺ also needs time to recover. Or be like Ate girl, who has her life all figured out, plans ahead and DMs us first to check if there is biko. π

As we were closing the shop today, it occurred to us that John was the first customer to come in the morning, came back in the afternoon for late lunch, and was the last customer of the day...as in most days of the week.
And so we've decided..."bigyan ng t-shirt yan!!!" πππ
It was the last piece. Our first official merch has sold out. Salamat po!! π

If you're a new follower, here is a quick reintroduction. If you're an OG suki, let's look back on the journey thus far...
We are Jo & Sandra, husband and wife. We started Greenknowe in 2022, equipped with Jo's decades of experience as a chef, but with very little experience of running our own venue (it is a different ballgame altogether, we would quickly discover π
).
Looks like Jo is part of an ongoing trend of chef-owned cafes and restaurants, which is great! Finally, all these highly experienced chefs are finally cooking their own Filipino food.
We are a neighbourhood cafe, where locals go everyday for their coffee and classic brekkie, and more importantly for connection.
But we are equally Filipino inspired, playing to our strengths. It is, after all, the cuisine that we know best.
The journey is definitely full of challenges (so just keep supporting Filipino business π΅ππ΅ππ΅π). But 3.5 years on, we are still here, nurturing the community we've helped build.
Aaaaaand, this is how this Filipino inspired cafe has found its spot in Elizabeth Bay, of all places! Probably less than 1 percent Filipino population (and that already includes us as we live locally ππ).
Thank you for reading this rather very long caption. See you at Greenknowe! π
Also typo on the video text - should be "to do." βοΈto the OC peeps out there

'April is Filipino Food Month' Series:
Yesterday, Greenknowe's top selling item on the new menu was our Ala Eh Lomi. We almost sold out before noon. π±
This usually happens on weekends when our kababayan have more free time to go on a mini food trip, and have their Filipino food fix.
Yesterday was a random Wednesday. The people who ordered lomi were the same locals who would usually go for our equally good, classic eggs your way.
We couldn't help but feel amused. Somehow, in the understated way of a neighbourhood cafe, we have helped promote Filipino Food.
To our ever supportive Elizabeth Bay locals, thank you for helping Filipino food to take space in this part of Sydney.
To the growing Filipino community in Australia, keep suppporting π΅π businesses. It means a lot is an understatement. π
Also, lomi is available all day, 7 days a week. It is now part of the new menu, thanks to you. π

Like so many Filipino-powered small businesses all over Sydney, we are always grateful for people who travel just to have their Filipino food fix. We aim to make it worth your while. Sa uulitin! ππ«Ά
