We didn’t set out to build an app.
We just needed a way for our daughter to communicate at school—and the “babyish” cards from the OT weren’t cutting it.
What started as a few laminated cards turned into a communication system designed to be:
- Clear during dysregulation
- Cool enough for a primary school kid
- Flexible enough for home, school, or texting
Sometimes these supports don’t fail because they’re useless. They fail because they feel embarrassing, overwhelming, or disconnected from real life.
Maybe the goal is simple: make support look normal, just like wearing a pair of glasses to read a book 👓

I have to say that I’ve always been an extremely positive person. In many ways, it’s what has helped me survive as a parent carer. Caring for my 11yo son with ASD2, my eldest who is ASD1 with Bipolar Disorder 1, and a few others along the way.
It’s almost as if I do my best work when things are at their worst.
But I’m finding that as the years go by, some of the days that are the hardest come when I least expect it. I think my caring role can creep up on me. Whole days where all I want to do is cry, even when everyone else in my house is doing ok. The years of putting everyone before me, has come at a cost.
Today that meant a visit to a cardiologist to see why I keep getting pressure on my chest. What the doctor thought was a gallbladder problem, now looks more likely to be my heart.
The expectation that unpaid carers continually show up has an impact both mentally, and physically.
I always thought I was invincible and that I could escape these issues. I’m realising that positivity alone isn’t enough when you have to sacrifice so much every day.
So looks like I’m just as human as everyone else ❤️🩹

On the latest episode of Why Do We Care?, I sat down with Julia Coorey, also known as Michael's Mum. This incredible woman shares how she manages life caring for her eldest child Michael, who was diagnosed with severe nonverbal autism aged eighteen months, alongside his two younger sisters.
Between training support workers, juggling therapy, home schooling, and just simply keeping Michael and her family safe, Julia shares the extreme complexities of daily life.
To survive her new normal, Julia has harnessed her writing skills from her former life as a lawyer, to be a voice for carers in Australia. She started the page ‘Michael’s Mum’ to talk about the challenges she could see all carers, including herself, having to face to ensure their family survives. Her posts have created a community of carers who resonate with her observations of the NDIS, government and what real care actually looks like.

From day one, she knew this wouldn’t be simple. 💛
Postnatal depression. A baby who wouldn’t sleep. A chance clinical trial. Mental health struggles. School refusal.
Valentina’s ADHD journey with her son wasn’t straightforward — but her love never wavered.
This one’s raw, real, and for every mum who’s ever felt alone in it. 🎧 New episode out now — link in comments.

Ep 9 of ‘Why Do We Care?’ lands on Spotify this Friday morning where I chat with founder of Laura Ashmole about the community of carers she is creating for change. The Australian census is coming soon and all parent carers must tick the 'l am a carer' box to ensure more government funding for carers to be supported in their everyday struggle to support neurodivergent, disabled and mentally ill loved ones.
