Lazy Thinking is a new restaurant and beer bar located on New Canterbury Road. The establishment boasts an interesting combination of brewery and snaggery, coupled with a record store - all due to open in late March 2023. Although the opening date was slightly delayed, the refit is well underway and the first menu is almost complete. Customers can expect sausage making classes at the new Petersham location, which can be booked through Chaotic Social. Get ready for an exciting and innovative experience at Lazy Thinking.

We raised $13,455 yesterday. In a single bloody day.
A thousand million thank yous to everyone who donated, shared our posts, spread the word or helped us with a little errand here and there in the lead-up. And an especially enormous thank you to our cosmically generous private donor and local Dully legend, who matched every dollar donated yesterday. An absurdly generous thing to do.

As we’ve been banging on about, though, raising money is only part of how we’re trying to support independent Australian musical artists.

Yesterday we also had two sets of studio speakers, a PA system, two synthesisers, two keyboards, a MIDI controller, acoustic treatment for our residency studio and an entire new storage facility offered to us for our programs. Six more people signed up to provide free accommodation for artists. All in one day. Silliness, really.

We know it’s super tough for most people at the moment, so we’re increasingly focused on making better use of the resources that already exist within our community. Equipment sitting unused, spare rooms, empty spaces, people’s skills and time. Getting more of those things into the hands of independent artists who need them.

Yesterday was a pretty spectacular example of what that can look like, and why we think well-organised communities are so important to healthy arts ecosystems. Making better use of existing resources is, to us, a pretty fundamental part of a healthy community and civic society. We think so, anyway.

We do, of course, still need to raise money. Artist stipends, storage units, equipment, residency apartment rent and a kazillion other things cost money every week. We’re now utterly reliant on donations and memberships to keep doing this.

We’re supremely ambitious about what we want to do over the coming year, and yesterday has given us an enormous helping hand.

Excuse the post-bedtime post. This just in. An absolute, solid gold, dead set legend of a Lazy Thinking supporter (who has supported us for a long time and wishes to remain anonymous) has just agreed to match every dollar donated to us during AusArt Day tomorrow, up to $20,000.

So from 12:01 am in a little less than two hours to 11:59 pm tomorrow night, anything you donate through our AusArt Day campaign will be bloody doubled, until we reach that $20,000 mark.

If you have never donated to us before, this would sorta kinda be a really, really good time to do it.

A VERY BIG DAY NEXT WEEK.

Next week is AusArt Day, the bestest, biggest and baddest National fundraising day for the arts, and Lazy Thinking is rocking it.

We’re going to make a pretty serious push to raise some much-needed money for everything we now do and we’re also going to use the day to encourage more people to share resources they already have that could be put to good use by independent artists. In case you missed it, coordinating existing resources and making them available to the independent music community is now a huge part of what we do.

Spare rooms and accommodation for touring artists, music equipment for DIY shows, recording and rehearsal spaces, and people with useful skills and time to contribute.

All of these things can be every bit as valuable to us as financial donations, and mean we can provide more support to more artists without everything having to cost more money.

So next Thursday (and in the lead up) we’ll be making a bit of noise, asking for your help, and hopefully bringing a few more people into the fold. Whether it’s $5, $50, something considerably larger, or something useful you can share, it all really fekin helps.

A couple of very excellent things happened at Lazy Thinking over the last few days.

An organisation that prefers to remain anonymous donated $10,000 to support the work we’re doing. Another amazing organisation, The Underground Stage , donated a brand new generator for our DIY Equipment Program. Incredible, take-your-breath-away generosity and support that left us a bit speechless.

The $10,000 will provide critical funding for pretty much everything we now do: artist accommodation stipends, and studio time for the residency, equipment and maintenance for our DIY initiative, and the already quite insane amount of admin involved in running our new Artist Accommodation Network.

Our first generator gives us even more flexibility in supporting and equipping DIY shows, which we’re now doing multiple times a week.

A thousand thank yous, folks. It means a huge amount to have people and organisations getting behind what we’re building and helping us provide more free support to independent Australian musical artists.

And whether it’s $5 or $5,000, every donation helps us keep doing what we’re doing. Making all of this work financially is always a challenge. Hey hey!

So a few weeks ago we talked about what Lazy Thinking looks like after we closed our original venue, and about the broader organisation we’ve spent the last 18 months building. In case you missed it, Lazy Thinking is now a not-for-profit organisation providing free support and resources to independent musical artists.

Since closing the original venue six weeks ago, we’ve been working our bottoms off expanding that work quite a bit further. So here’s a quick update on what that actually looks like in practice and where things are at.

ARTIST RESIDENCIES
Four completed so far. We’re now running one every month, providing artists with free accommodation at two locations, an in-house recording studio, time and space to work, financial support and access to a larger studio.

DIY EQUIPMENT
We’ve now provided free equipment for 12 DIY shows, with another 19 already booked before the end of the year. We now run two Sydney-based storage locations and are closing in on a third.

We are always in need of gear, so if you have anything kicking around that you don’t need, please reach out.

ARTIST ACCOMMODATION
13 artists have already lined up free accommodation through the network. We’ve just confirmed our first hosts in both Canberra and Melbourne and we’ll be putting a lot of work into expanding the network nationally over the next six months.

PRODUCTION + RELEASE SUPPORT

It’s been a few weeks since we closed the doors of the Lazy Thinking venue in Dulwich Hill. And look, full disclosure, that s**t hurt like hell. We miss that special, weird little room enormously. Like all things in life though, we go on and focus on the things we do and not the things we can’t control.

For Lazy Thinking, that means fully embracing what we’ve worked our arses off over the last 18 months to build: an organisation providing free, meaningful support and resources to independent artists.

We think it’s harder than ever to operate, survive and prosper as an independent artist, and there is a real lack of support infrastructure. So that is, quite simply, what Lazy Thinking now exists to do. G’day.

We’ll be doing shows again shortly (something we’re already closing in on), but they’re now just one part of that. Our year-round Residency Program provides accommodation, studios and financial support. We’ve launched an Artist Accommodation Network providing touring a@d working artists somewhere to stay for free, and our DIY Equipment Program has already supported nine shows, with another 19 booked this year. Lazy Thinking Records continues to resource lesser-known and emerging artists to release music.

We have no sources of income and doing all of this costs money. So we need to raise money, obviously. But times are super tough for a lot of people. Most people. And money isn’t the only useful thing a community has.

There are spare rooms, empty apartments, PAs, mixing desks, drum kits, studios, skills, knowledge and time sitting unused all over the place. We want to get increasingly good at finding those resources and getting them to independent artists who need them.

We’re really ambitious about where this goes and want to build these networks and resources well beyond Sydney, as we’re already doing through the Residency Program.

The venue was a very important part of Lazy Thinking. It wasn’t the whole of Lazy Thinking. We loved it, and we’ll have another one. But there is a lot more we can and already do for independent artists, and we’re cracking on with it.

Starting another new little thing today. We’ve been working on this one for a little while. Introducing Lazy Thinking Artist Accommodation.

Another of the main areas artists tell us they really struggle with is the money they often need to spend on accommodation when they’re out of town, whether it’s on tour, recording, performing or whatever else they need to travel for. So today we’re launching a community accommodation network providing free temporary accommodation for independent artists in Eora/Sydney (for now).

We’ve already got a growing network of hosts offering spare rooms, granny flats and other accommodation, and we’re looking for more people who’d like to be part of it.

Sporting clubs and schools have been mobilising their communities to provide accommodation for eons, and we need to catch up. Artists need to travel regularly, and there are so many generous and thoughtful people in the community willing to use the resources they already have to support them.

We increasingly want to provide support and resources through careful and considered coordination with the community, just like our DIY initiative, which has had such a good and generous response from contributors and donors.

So we’re hopeful this can also be a really useful network. We’ll carefully coordinate each stay with both the artist and host. We can’t guarantee we’ll be able to find accommodation for every request, but we’ll do everything we reasonably can to help.

There’s no ongoing commitment for hosts and we’ll contact you when we have a request that might be a good fit. You can then decide whether it works for you.

If you’re an artist requiring temporary accommodation in Sydney, or have a spare room, granny flat or similar that you’d be happy to make available occasionally, you can join the network or request accommodation via the link in our bio and on our website.

Starting a new little thing today. We have quite a lot of gear from the venue and we want to ensure it continues to be used to support shows by new and emerging and independent artists while we’re finalising and moving into our new digs.

So we’re launching Lazy Thinking DIY today and will be making all of our gear and equipment available free of charge for DIY shows upon request. We’ll also look to keep it going as a continuous service after we’re in at the new place.

We’ll want to make sure your show is a legit DIY show via a few simple questions, but all very straightforward and the gear is available easily and quickly.

And so our time is now up with the Dulwich Hill space.

I’m immensely proud of what the first Lazy Thinking space achieved in its nearly three years and have an an almost unbearably intense mix of love for the myriad people who have passed through it, pride at knowing we achieved what we set out to do, excitement at knowing the future is bright (both for lazy thinking and the independent music community despite the obvious current challenges), and grief at losing so special a space.

I want to say a bottomless thank you to many people. Firstly all of the staff who have worked so hard, from the very early shows when we desperately raced around Dulwich Hill trying to find a bass amp 25 minutes before autobahns__ were scheduled to play (and somehow did), to some of the 12 hour shows we did in our last few weeks. Thank you. For your immense work, generosity and limitless dedication to making Lazy the very special and personal place it has been to so many people.

To the many, many, many artists who performed at the space. I hope we looked after you in the way we wanted to. The most important part of our live music programming has always been prioritising new and emerging artists and providing them with a safe and always accessible place to play. I like to think we never lost sight of that.

And to the people who came to the shows. Thank you. To those who came every week, thank you. To those you wandered past, thought ‘what in the actual living.. is going on here?’ and popped in for an hour or three, thank you.

Lastly, despite the enormous disruption of an eviction on many people in many ways, just a call out that we are totally committed to avoiding being dispirited about the change in any way.

So forever onwards. We have a new artist in residence starting later in the month, three incredible long form records being released very shortly through the label, a free music education program we’ll be running at two locations shortly and the pressing business of finalising our next new space for shows.

Ok, so we have a comically and extraordinarily tight turnaround to make sure we can honour our final scheduled shows, give the first place a proper send-off, and hand the keys back to our landlord.

We’ll be having a bit of a garage sale and working bee this Sunday from 12 to 5:30. The garage sale will have a s**t ton of Lazy Thinking stuff and items from our first home available, including kitchen equipment, furniture, vinyl, the bespoke handmade Lazy Thinking plates, cutlery, glassware and a lot of other random stuff from the venue.

We also have larger items like our deep fryer and grill that we are looking to get rid of quickly for next to nothing.

We will also have quite a bit of Lazy Thinking memorabilia available by donation, including sections of the poster panels that have covered the venue walls for the last few years, as well as our blue bar tables currently bolted to the wall, blue bench, Driveway of Dreams furniture and that ridiculously amazing shelving unit for the record store in the middle of the venue. If you can bring the necessary tools and extricate this stuff from the venue, it’s all available to a good home for a donation of your choosing.

Not really sure what to say about this event. This is the last ever show at the Dulwich Hill venue. We’ve deliberately kept it as a bit of a family affair and focused on artists we’re especially close to.

To get to New Canterbury Road in Dulwich Hill, the nearest train station is Dulwich Hill Station which is a 10-minute walk away from the area. Alternatively, you can take the 418, 426 or 428 bus and alight at Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre or Wardell Road.
