A rare opportunity to taste two Australian icons side by side.

Henschke Hill of Grace 2002 from Eden Valley and Penfolds Grange 2003 from South Australia.

Few wines carry the history and reputation of Hill of Grace. Sourced from a tiny vineyard of pre-phylloxera shiraz vines first planted in the 1860s, it remains one of Australia's most revered single-vineyard wines. Six generations of the Henschke family have helped shape its story, with the vineyard itself sitting beside the historic Gnadenberg Church in Eden Valley.

Alongside it was Penfolds Grange, arguably Australia's most famous wine. Created by Max Schubert in the 1950s against the wishes of Penfolds management, Grange went on to become the wine that changed global perceptions of Australian fine wine. Today it remains the benchmark for multi-regional Australian shiraz.

Tasted in sequence, they highlighted two very different visions of greatness. One built around a singular historic vineyard and family legacy. The other around blending, innovation and the pursuit of consistency across generations. Both have earned their place among the world's great wines.

It's that time.

A fascinating side-by-side featuring two of Australia's benchmark pinot noirs.

By Farr Tout Près Pinot Noir 2015 from Geelong and Yarra Yering Carrodus Pinot Noir 2017 from the Yarra Valley.

By Farr has become one of Australia's most celebrated producers, with Gary and Nick Farr crafting wines that have helped define modern Australian pinot noir. The Tout Près vineyard, planted beside the family home in Bannockburn, is regarded as one of the estate's greatest sites.

Alongside it was the Yarra Yering Carrodus Pinot Noir 2017. Founded by the legendary Dr Bailey Carrodus in 1969, Yarra Yering was one of the pioneering wineries of the Yarra Valley. The Carrodus range represents the pinnacle of the estate and honours the man whose vision helped establish the region's reputation for fine wine.

Tasted in sequence, they were a reminder that Australia's greatest pinot noirs are shaped as much by the people behind them as the vineyards they come from.
