AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM STUYVESANT'S HOUSE - WE ARE OPEN!

To all our loyal customers and friends,

For more than 60 years, there has been a restaurant at 45 Alexander Street Crows Nest, and for more than 50 years this has been Stuyvesant's House - the landmark that has been a go-to for Sydneysiders craving schnitzel, sausage, sauerkraut, spaetzle, and schweinshaxe (pork knuckle). Known for having one of Australia’s most extensive wine cellars, the venue has long been a favourite in Sydney's dining scene (and famous for it's long lunches and extensive wine list).

Originally from a small town in Germany’s Black Forest region, Rudi and Max Dietz trained in Europe before Rudi relocated to Australia in 1970, and younger brother Max followed not long after.

Rudi took over Stuyvesant House in 1973 from a Dutch owner, introducing authentic German flavours to the lower north shore.
The impressive menu offers schnitzel, succulent roasts, suckling pig, and schmalz-bauernbrot (rye bread with a lard-like spread). Even a few dishes from the original Dutch owners remain, including bitterballen (veal and chicken meatballs), and schnapper zuiderzee (white-wine poached snapper with lobster, oysters, and hollandaise).

After decades in the kitchen, Max's last service at the restaurant was Christmas Eve 2024, and he has taken a very well earned retirement. Rudi has been looking for a replacement Head Chef, but Max has left big shoes to fill!

Rudi considered selling the building in June of this year, but ultimately he couldn't say goodbye to his home for more than 50 years so - despite the rumours you might have heard - STUYVESANT'S HOUSE REMAINS OPEN!
