The tale of a terrible neighbour. Some bring good vibes… others bring cardboard boxes and one-star reviews.
We had the pleasure of being next door to a “visionary entrepreneur” who somehow managed to close down a Thai restaurant in Rozelle and a sports gear empire at the same time. Truly a man of many talents.
While we were trying to bring life, coffee, people and atmosphere back to Norton Street with tables, chairs and happy customers… Steve was busy protecting the artistic integrity of his mountain of imported sports gear boxes.
Apparently our customers sitting outside enjoying espresso was ruining the feng shui of the warehouse chic aesthetic.
Nothing says “successful businessman” quite like spending your free time leaving one-star reviews for your neighbours instead of customers leaving five-star reviews for you.
Anyway Steve… good luck on the next business adventure. Maybe third time lucky.
Norton Street survived.
The tables stayed full.
The coffee kept flowing.
And the boxes… well… eventually they disappeared too,

Kegworth public School Fete
Bar Italia legends Angela & Marcello and their team are once again proudly supporting the Kegworth Public School Autumn Fete!
Together with their amazing volunteers, they’ve created the famous Pasta Section — because no Italian can survive a school fete without carbs and a little yelling from the kitchen.
And yes… the beautiful little Piaggio Ape will be there serving:
Ice cold Sicilian Granita
Authentic artisan Gelato
Basically… happiness on three wheels.
So get down there today from 10am till 3pm, support the school, say hello to the volunteers, grab yourself a pasta, a granita e gelato… and if you leave without eating, an Italian nonna somewhere will be very disappointed in you.
See you there ragazzi! 🇮🇹

Yesterday, tuesday the 19th of May around 1pm… the doors opened and suddenly 40 private school students marched in like a scene straight out of the fast and furious.
One by one… gelato in hand… flavours flying everywhere… pistachio on faces, chocolate on uniforms and enough sugar to power all of Sydney
Apparently we were chosen as part of an “excursion to the best gelato shops in Sydney.” we accept that!
Excursion?
No no no… this was a full investigation by the Gelato FBI
After careful scientific testing, professional tasting techniques… the students confirmed what their teachers already knew:
“Good gelato fixes everything.”
To all the amazing students and teachers — thank you for bringing the chaos, the laughter and the empty gelato trays,
And to the other gelato shops in Sydney…
mi dispiace ragazzi… better luck next excursion.
(Just saying)

My mother always told me,
“Sit at the table like a gentleman. Back straight, elbows off the table, and always eat your spaghetti with a fork.”
For my entire life, I respected those rules.
Then this Sunfay afternoon I got dragged in to enter a spaghetti eating competition…
and everything my poor mother taught me disappeared faster than parmesan at an Italian wedding.
The rules were simple:
No forks.
No spoons.
Just you you and a mountain of spaghetti.
Straight away I knew Mum was watching from heaven shaking her head.
I could almost hear her:
“Forty years I spent teaching this boy manners… and now look at him. He eats like a labrador in a wind tunnel.”
The whistle blew and suddenly the room turned into absolute chaos.
Grown men and woman were diving face first into pasta bowls. Sauce was flying through the air. One bloke two up from me his name Peter Cannoli best in the business in cannoli aka Dolce Bella he was snorted the spaghetti strand through his nose and still kept eating like nothing happened.
At first, I tried to stay classy.
Small bites. Gentle slurping. A little dignity.
Then I looked up and saw things got real Peter assaulting spaghetti like an industrial vacuum cleaner. The crowd was cheering. Someone’s Nonna was screaming “FORZA!” from the back of the room.
That’s when survival instincts kicked in.
Next minute I was face first in the bowl the the hand came in like an excavator.
Spaghetti hanging from my Goaty.
And all I could think was:
“Mum, I’m so sorry.”
I imagined her up in heaven standing beside Saint Peter saying:
“I taught him to twirl pasta delicately with a fork… now look at him. He’s fighting pasta like they owe him money.”
And then… silence.
The final whistle blew.
I didn’t win the competition.
I came second.
Mr Cannoli won the competition he also took all the $$$ in Ettalong 🤑
Because deep down I know Mum was laughing.
And somewhere up there she was saying:
“Well… at least he still finished his dinner.”

This weekend we rolled into the Galleria Ettalong Italian Festival like a proper Italian family our Piaggio Ape our Gelato and our Granita… loud music, dancing, Granita disappearing faster than cash at a wedding, and gelato Rimini.
By the end of the day even the bosses left the business hit the dance floor like old-school dons at a Sicilian celebration.
Ettalong… you treated us like famiglia.
We came, we served, we danced… and nobody refused the granita. 🇮🇹🤌
See you next year.

Ciao Ettalong! 🇮🇹🍋
We are incredibly excited and honoured to be part of the wonderful Italian Festival at the Galleria Ettalong this Saturday and Sunday.
Join us for a true taste of Sicily as we serve our traditional handcrafted Gelato and our famous Sicilian Granita — inspired by the legendary Sicilian “Bam Bar” experience… only this time served with a little extra charm from our tiny but mighty Piaggio Ape.
In true Italian style, the vehicle is small, the flavours are big, and the opinions from Nonna are even bigger.
So stick your head in, say “ciao,” and cool down with a Granita or Gelato made the old-fashioned way — with passion, tradition, and just enough chaos to make it authentically Italian.
Galleria Ettalong Italian Festival
Saturday & Sunday
Come for the festival… stay because your family argued for 20 minutes over which flavour to order. 🍨🇮🇹

WINTER IS COMING… We are locked and loaded, the HEAT is on at Bar Italia
You bring the appetite, we’ll bring the warmth… emotional AND physical.
Cold outside? Perfect. That just means your gnocchi hugs you tighter, your pizza basically becomes a heated blanket with cheese.
We’ve got outdoor heaters cranked so high you might forget it’s winter… or accidentally order gelato and still be sweating. (Don’t worry, we support that decision.)
From 8AM to 11PM, we’re serving:
Coffee strong enough to wake the neighbours
("And just to mention please respect our neighbours and don block their driveway")
Pasta that will solves that problems,
Pizza that deserves its own postcode
Gelato that ignores the weather forecast
So rug up, show up, and let us defrost your soul.
Bar Italia — where winter loses every single time.
Put in the comments below who you think that crazy man with the helmet is and what is that dance move?

Today at Bar Italia we didn’t just serve lunch… we hosted a full-blown summit of legends.
Leading the charge was Wayne Pearce — Balmain royalty, looking like he could still lace up the boots, run 80 minutes, and then critique the espresso for not tracking back in defence and play the guitar.
Then there was Tom Panos… who somehow turned ordering lunch into a 45-minute motivational seminar.
“Con, this isn’t just a pasta… this is a high-performance carb strategy. You’ve got to visualise the gnocchi before you eat the gnocchi.”
By the time the food came out, half the staff had set life goals and the other half were considering careers in real estate.
And of course, the man— the myth, the legend, John McGrath — calmly surveying the room like he might list it, sell it, and lease it back to us before dessert. I’m pretty sure he asked for a floor plan with his tiramisu, whilst walking around shoeless, just socks, mmmmm
Between the three of them:
One could captain the Australian footy team
One could sell the stadium twice over.
And the last one could motivate the crowd to believe they built it.
Meanwhile, Me, I’m from the poor side of the family just working hard.
Only at Bar Italia — where the lunch specials come with a keynote speaker, a premiership aura, and possibly a property appraisal.
I’m charging extra next time… not for the food — for the inspiration.
P.S Please excuse the camera man he has gone to spec savers.

OFFICIAL PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
After an emergency meeting, several espressos, absolutely no public consultation on fuel levy charges by our suppliers… and a brief moment of staring into the abyss — we can confirm:
We are NOT cash only (haven’t been since COVID, but who’s counting)
Yes, you can use your card when ordering online via our ordering system — welcome to the future
For those who enjoy a bit of drama — there is an ATM on site if you’d like the full vintage experience (note: it charges $2.50 and a small emotional fee)
Thank you for your cooperation during this historic moment.
We will now take no further questions and return to making great food… like nothing ever happened.
This announcement has been approved by absolutely no one and funded entirely by caffeine.

NEWS FLASH--- NEWS FLASH
We’re honestly so overwhelmed in the most beautiful way ❤️
After being on A Current Affair, the love and support we’ve received from all over Australia has truly touched us. People calling, messaging, walking through our doors… it means more than words can say.
A special thank you to the lovely ladies who came all the way from the Northern Beaches just to see us — that kind of support is something we never take for granted. You said you love Con, and you love old school… well, that’s exactly who we are, and always will be.
We’re just a simple, old-school Italian place doing things the way we always have — with heart, family, and a lot of passion 🇮🇹
Thank you to A Current Affair for telling our story and showing people what we’re about.
And to the one-star reviewers… bad luck, we’re still here 😄
With love and gratitude,
Bar Italia ❤️

To everyone who saw us on A Current Affair…
Mamma mia… what a night 😂🇮🇹
We just want to say a massive GRAZIE to all of you legends who watched, laughed, and then came down to see if we’re really as cheeky as they say. (Spoiler: we are… maybe worse.)
For 75 years we’ve been doing things the old-school way — no QR codes, no foam, no “deconstructed lasagna”… just proper food, loud voices, big personalities, and yes… CASH ONLY. Not because we’re dodgy — because we’re stubborn 🤌
As for the one-star reviews… we read them like bedtime stories. Some people see complaints — we see comedy gold. If you can’t laugh at yourself, what are you doing? Life’s too short to cry over al dente pasta.
To our loyal locals, our new customers, and even the one-star critics (we love you too, don’t worry)… thank you for keeping the spirit alive. You’re the reason the doors are still open, the sauce is still simmering, and the boss is still yelling from the kitchen like it’s 1985.
So come in, bring cash, bring your sense of humour, and if you don’t like the food… at least leave us a funny review 😏
With love, chaos, and a little bit of attitude,
The Old School Italians 🍝🇮🇹
PS we do have QR codes and a ATM for you know wow 😳

What people say
Italian restaurants are known for their delicious food, warm hospitality, and cozy ambiance. Bar Italia on Norton Street in Sydney is no exception. This Italian restaurant, coffee shop, and pizza place has won the hearts of many customers with its authentic Italian cuisine and friendly service.
One of the things that sets Bar Italia apart from other Italian restaurants is its commitment to using only full-fat milk in their coffee. They don't offer skim, soy or light milk options, which ensures that every cup of coffee is rich and creamy. The kitchen at Bar Italia closes one hour before closing time, so make sure to plan your visit accordingly.
Bar Italia also celebrates important events and holidays with its customers. On ANZAC Day, a customer played Reveille on his Bugle to honor fallen soldiers. During Easter, they wished their Orthodox and Greek customers a happy holiday with a special message on social media.
When faced with staff shortages or unexpected closures due to weather or maintenance issues, Bar Italia doesn't hesitate to call in reinforcements. They recently brought in an experienced chef from Pappadele Haberfield and Gigi Balmain to help out during a busy period.
Overall, Bar Italia is a must-visit for anyone looking for authentic Italian cuisine served with a smile. Whether you're in the mood for pizza or pasta, you won't be disappointed by the quality of food and service at this charming restaurant on Norton Street.
