Sept 7 and 21 weekends are unavailable and have been since mid August, which is really unusual. I’m still getting emails but I do apologise, especially to long-time clients but I can’t fit in anymore for those dates. Ps : Snapshot of some cakes of past months…some are a quick one in the box in poor lighting. I know, I’m getting lazier with the shots! 😄

For the first time, I have two offspring in The Hornsby Gang Show. The village - cast, production team, backstage crew, props, catering, ushering, security, personnel - have worked long and hard all year to bring you this wonderful show. It’s a great place for youth to build confidence, camaraderie and leadership skills.
Please support this labour of love by buying tickets. And if you’re going, guess which ones are the two offspring! 😉Tickets at gangshow.com

In the early days of caking, I would get super excited about making cakes for the kids. It meant creative freedom and the chance to try out new techniques. Now after making thousands of cakes for work, I’m not in the same mind frame anymore. So it takes a really interesting idea to get me going.
This is a Grey Wolf scout badge brought to life as a fondant sculpture hand carved and painted. The eyes were the most difficult part to get right and I had to get the wolf looking wise and benevolent not aggressive. I was pretty happy with it but I do regret the piping. You know when you done a marathon and then drop the ball at the last 100m because you just can’t be bothered anymore? That was the piping 😂.

I still get requests for cake pops and this article tells the story of why I hardly do them anymore. Sugar has tripled in price since 2020 and white chocolate, which we use a lot of for cake pops has doubled. It’s hard to offer them at a price which makes sense and word is, chocolate prices will only be going up from here.
I made the hard decision to close the shop a year ago based on many factors, some of them personal. But the climate was certainly a part of it. I knew things would get really tough as small businesses are squeezed between higher costs and lower disposable incomes. On the back of higher inflation, people need higher wages to make ends meet, but this also adds to the squeeze for small businesses.
I was watching another report on how small businesses are struggling and it touched on a pet peeve of mine - bureaucracy and regulation. Small businesses don’t have the resources to let you know what percentage of the product came from which country or other sterling regulations like that. They’re too busy keeping head above water.

There was a joke among the Malaysian Chinese community that this year should be 2023A😄. The number four is considered taboo, much the way the number 13 is. The word sounds similar to the word death in Chinese. But then a friend pointed out that it really shouldn’t be, that the number four is considered auspicious in many traditional contexts. It also sounds like “yes” and “correct“ in Hokkien.
So yes to 2024, and yes to all the good things and the lessons it brings. Here’s to a happy 2024, peeps!

Some of my recent favs. The tiny flowers is a repeat of last years because the birthday girl wanted the same flavour cake with the same design, but i gave it a little update!

These sunflowers are made from a mould, but because of the way they are made, no two are exactly alike. I got to thinking, that’s kinda like us. Perfectly made while imperfect, and no other like us. I hope like these flowers, we keep turning to the light and know how beautiful we are.

Trying to decide between a lemon drizzle or a hazelnut torte for the school fair cake sale. Any votes?
The OLOR Waitara family fair is on Sunday, and sounds like I’ll be between the ring toss, cake stall and treasury 😄. I hope to see you there! See story for the stalls, food and rides.

Leaving the shop felt like a break-up to me. It was the right decision but adjusting to a new normal takes a bit of work. 😌
Those who need edible prints can still pickup from our friendly neighbourhood supermarket (with the best coffee!). Now that the handover is done, I’ll work on updating the website.
Missing you all!
