Before Criterion was the hotel you know today, this corner was home to one of Sydney’s most famous theatres.
The Criterion Theatre opened in 1886 and became one of Sydney’s great intimate playhouses, welcoming audiences for almost 50 years. In 1935, the theatre was demolished as Park Street was widened, making way for the Criterion Hotel that stands here today.

What people say
The Criterion Hotel Sydney, located at 260 Pitt St Cnr Park Street, is not just any ordinary pub. It has a rich history dating back to the 1840s when the Gallagher family fled Ireland due to famine and disease. The Gallaghers became a prosperous clan in Australia and established themselves in Maitland before moving south of Dungog in search of more opportunities. J.J. Gallagher, Lawrence's son, was a great entrepreneur who travelled through various towns selling utensils and clothing with his horse and van. In the 1870s, he bought land near Larry's Flat with the hope of establishing a new and prosperous town, now known as Krambach.
Today, The Criterion Hotel Sydney stands tall as a testament to the Gallaghers' legacy. The pub offers an authentic Australian experience with its classic decor and friendly staff. Whether you're looking for a quick drink after work or a hearty meal with friends, The Criterion Hotel Sydney has got you covered. With its prime location in the heart of Sydney, it's easy to see why this pub is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. So if you're looking for a place to unwind and enjoy good food and drinks, head on over to The Criterion Hotel Sydney - you won't be disappointed!
