How to Make Traditional Czech Rye & Caraway Bread
This is an easy version of traditional Czech rye and caraway bread, made with dry yeast instead of a fermented sourdough starter.
Back home, the traditional method uses a naturally fermented sourdough starter, but this simplified recipe is quick, straightforward, and perfect for making while you’re away camping.
I’ll be sharing the full recipe this afternoon in my newsletter, including instructions for baking it at home or over the campfire.🌿

It’s rainy season here in the Northern Rivers, Australia. Lately our days have been spent working, or outside in our wetsuits trying to catch dinner or a few waves 🏄‍♀️ something that always feels like medicine to me.
We’ve also been sleeping in the caravan with my son because we’ve been missing that cosy camping feeling. There’s something really special about lying in there while the rain falls on the roof.
And after long wet days, coming home to the boys licking their plates clean after hot apple crumble and the grounding autumn recipes I’ve been sharing on Substack warms my soul too.

Devi Amma teaches that a mother is not defined solely by biology but by a deeper, psychological and spiritual capacity to nurture, protect, and give without condition; she reminds us that “mothering” is an energy expressed by anyone who offers care, patience, and emotional grounding to others, whether through raising children, supporting loved ones, or simply holding space for another human being’s growth, and in this way, mothers exist everywhere: in quiet sacrifices, in resilience, and in the unseen emotional labor that shapes lives; it’s this expansive understanding of motherhood that has inspired me to celebrate all forms of nurturing this Mother’s Day next week by offering
20% off my cookbooks,
because every mother, in whatever form she shows up, deserves something thoughtful, comforting, and nourishing to call her own.

This post is dedicated to all the beautiful families I had the privilege of experiencing India with.
One of Amma’s teachings really stayed with me: “Look at what the other person doesn’t have and try to give it to them.” I saw this come to life through the conversations I shared during our ashram stay~listening to people who have walked this path before me, hearing their stories of hardship, and connecting even with those outside our group. It was truly eye-opening.
They also say children are our greatest teachers, and I felt that deeply while traveling alone with my son for the first time. Children are like little mirrors, reflecting parts of ourselves we don’t always see.
Thank you to everyone who spoke with me, prayed with me, chanted mantras, showed patience, and supported us along the way. On the pictures you see us and kids planting trees at green shakti, pretending to do Poojas as a play , meditation their own mantras , feeding ppl in needs …

I’ve just returned from a deeply meaningful trip to India, where I traveled with my 6-year-old son. I felt a strong pull to go, perhaps to reconnect with a sense of spirituality that I had lost over the past three years, during a time when life seemed to lead me in the wrong direction.
We stayed in Amma’s ashram, a place rooted in devotion and quiet reflection. Out of respect, photography and documentation of certain practices are not allowed. Some rituals, known as poojas: sacred ceremonies involving prayer, offerings, and intention, are meant to remain private and experienced rather than shared.
What I can share, though, are glimpses of the beautiful surroundings that held us during this time.
I’ve also written more about my experience, including how I booked an Ayurvedic clinic as I had promised, over on my Substack. It’s free for anyone who feels curious to read. https://thesecretkitchen.substack.com/p/my-experience-in-ayurvedic-clinic
Grateful for the journey, the lessons, and the space to reconnect.

From our recent camping trip: cooking with whatever we had on hand, or found nearby, over the 🔥
We set off on a tiny surf trip for my partner’s birthday. There wasn’t any surf in the end, but the days unfolded in other beautiful ways; filled with cooking, fishing, and exploring the underwater world.

The pink and white handmade covers for the Intuitive Eating book have now sold out. I still have around 20 copies left in the misty blue and mint green covers.
This may be the final reprint, and I don’t plan to produce the book at this stage. Since I first self-published it through crowdfunding in 2018, the cost of recycled paper and local printing has increased significantly, making it difficult to continue.
This book was never created simply to sell — it was made to gently educate and to be kept as something meaningful at home, almost like an art piece. It brings together my own film photography, follows the cycles of nature, and includes poetry ( by my friend ) that reflects those rhythms. Each cover is handmade, embracing a sense of quiet, imperfect beauty.
Thank you to everyone who supported this !

Autumn baking feels like a subtle shift, where deeper, more comforting flavours slowly find their way in. I find myself drawn to things like plant-based tiramisu, hazelnut praline, carrot cake, sticky date, and warm notes of chocolate and vanilla.
As the seasons change, our taste buds seem to change with them, and perhaps our bodies ask for something a little richer, a little more grounding, just as nature quietly transforms around us.
In my own way, I try to let my cakes follow that rhythm, staying close to what the season offers because my Earth cakes are nature Too.
Im also trying to finish the next pottery batch ! Like the season - it’s slow ! More coming soon .

Our favourite restaurant 🌿🌱
Do you ever find yourself remembering small moments from childhood? The kind where a simple smell brings back where you were or what you were doing.
I carry memories like that from the forest: eating under the stars, feeling close to something simple and real. I hope, in my own small way, that my son might grow up with memories like these too.

Pottery inspired by medicinal and wild flowers has found its way back into my life again . I’m slowly working on a new batch, guided by the quiet beauty of nature, the changing seasons, and the small transitions that shape our days.
And then there are the “earh” cakes ~ they never really “sneak” in, because they’ve always been here. They just sneak into cute places and celebrations. Inspired by the same flowers and rhythms of life as my pottery, each one is thoughtfully made and lovingly customised, with the hope of bringing a little sunshine into everyone’s belly.

Can’t believe it’s the last week of summer!
One of the lovely things about this season is that it’s the perfect time to collect your bush tucker bunya nuts and turn them into something delicious. You could try the Bush Tucker vanilla sponge (the recipe is in the Earth Cakes book, page 42), make a tasty pesto, add them to curries, or serve them as a simple starter for your BBQ. All tips are in your newsletter via my Substack .
Sometimes simple really is best~ just olive oil, a little salt, and a touch of garlic.

You have been asking ~ we listened
EARTH & SKY LAMPS will be back ! We are bringing together our skills and love for SLOW craft and design, inspired by the earth beneath our feet and the plants that surround us.
We’re happy to share our Earth and Sky lamps will be available for preorders~ one-of-a-kind lamp bases, hand-crafted and painted with summer flowers from my garden and imagination. Each base is paired with a Bébè Moiré lampshade, made from hand-loomed raw silk dupion, pure eri silk and Kala cotton. The prints and weaves are soft and organic, with calm, hopeful colours. YOU can choose what style you like from what Emilie has available.
It’s been a joy to create these together, and we hope they will bring a little warmth and peace into your space again !
Due to a slow craft ~ allow at least one month for this creation to happen 🤎

I’ve just completed the final batch of covers for the Intuitive Eating Cookbook.
This release introduces handmade linen covers in soft lime green and delicate pink, each one thoughtfully crafted and truly special.
This book has been a deep art passion project of mine. Made from 100% recycled materials and printed in Australia, it carries the wisdom and experience I’ve gathered over the years in this industry. Across four chapters, guided by the seasons and moon cycles, it offers simple, nourishing recipes that reconnect you to the rhythms of nature and show you how to bring those rhythms into your kitchen.
Because at the end of the day, we are nature. When we move in harmony with its cycles, we create balance within ourselves and within our environment. When we don’t, disharmony can arise in both body and world.
From beginning to end, this book honours that philosophy: not excess, but alignment; not overwhelm, but flow.
This reprint, featuring the handmade linen covers, is a limited edition and will not be repeated.

Hope your Valentine’s Day is sweet and simple 💕
May your life be full of love like a colorful table — the kind with fresh flavors, natural sweetness, and just the right balance to keep your heart happy.

~Photos of my first book, INTUITIVE EATING ~ a true labor of love, created from the heart and lived experience.
Fresh fish prepared with native ginger and lime, cooked alongside my partner , and simple love cakes made to share.
Because love is not only spoken ~ it is prepared, nourished, and offered. And often, it reaches the heart through the hands… and through the food we share.

February arrives like a warm breeze carrying the scent of END OF summer: firing up the BBQ for our favorite miso eggplant, a recipe we love to make and share (coming to Substack this week). It feels like a turning page in the sky, closing the Year of the Snake ( literally) and opening the gate to the Year of the Horse ( hoping for more power ) .
