For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we honour our champion, Hondo Grattan.
This month is 50 years since ‘Hondo’ retired in May 1976.
Hondo Grattan, foaled in 1968, was by Hondo Hanover USA out of Lola Grattan (by Loreto ITA).
The ‘Bathurst Bulldog’ faced the starter on 116 occasions. He won 58 races (with 16 seconds and 17 thirds as well) and $215,402.
The two time Inter Dominion champion (1973 and 1974) and 1974 Miracle Mile winner also won two Harold Park Lord Mayors Cups.
In May 1976, the (then) NSW Trotting Club staged a big farewell night at Harold Park.
‘Hondo’ paraded down the straight with John Tapp’s hit-making song ‘Little Hondo’ playing from the speakers.
It was a proud night the Turnbull family and the Webb family that owned him.
He later went to Stud, siring 56 individual winners from 72 starters to the races. They all won a combined $533,857 in stakes.
Hondo Grattan passed away on 30 November 1994, aged 26 years. He is buried at his favourite spot in a paddock at stables at The Lagoon.
A true Champion and a real crowd favourite.

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we look back on Don’t Retreat.
Bred by Barry Rose, Don’t Retreat was foaled in 1970.
He was a younger half-brother to classy pacer Alecane and Eva Storm.
In his career of 112 starts, he won 55 races (with 19 seconds and 13 thirds as well) and $340,917.
Later at Stud, Don’t Retreat produced 40 individual winners from 75 starts, that won $492,751 in prizemoney.
Today’s photos are from Don’t Retreat’s win at Harold Park in the Australia Day Cup in 1977.

Our Country & Western Night brought the Wild West trackside with hearty comfort food, live music, line dancing and plenty of brave attempts on the mechanical bull.
