Well , It was a great idea. Make millions of dollars and pour it all back into the community, Neighbours In Need and charity... BUT it did not get a response that even made it slightly viable, there just wasn't enough support...I can blame the cost of living crisis, interest rate rises, apathy, the products offered, our pricing... at the end of the day it was still a business idea and sometimes the best intentions, and throwing money at the advertising on Radio and every social space are not enough to give it traction and there was no way we could continue. We have repaid all Paypal and Stripe purchases now. We are disappointed that we were unable to support the individuals, families and charities that we set out to help more than anything else. On this day in 2020 according to the findings of the NSW Coroner (no-one died but they investigate these things) an electrical fire started in a beauty business downstairs from Fred's. The fire destroyed much of the original Whitemans Building in Camden, originally a country town department store from the late 1800's, and the home of our beloved restaurant Upstairs@Fred's. After 3 years, today is the first time the anniversary has come and gone without me making a mess of myself and crying in an alcoholic stupor. The pictures are no longer triggers and I'm really happy to be alive and over a very dark period for our family. Sobriety has helped me move on from the loss of what was recognised as a great venue and the start something new, CORNERSTONE. It was alcohol that clouded my judgement and led to bad decisions, depression, anxiety and loss of hope...So without that influence... depression, anxiety and loss of hope has been turned into motivation to help others by donating 100% of profit from this new business to 3 great causes... my judgement still may not be perfect and Mandy will tell you I still make plenty of bad decisions just not as many as before. Myka Mangos has just turned 4, he’s only just begun his leukaemia journey and treatment at Randwick Sydney Children’s hospital. His Mum and Dad will be financially challenged during this time travelling from Oran Park in Sydney’s Southwest to the hospital for treatment. They have two jobs, a mortgage, bills and a very sick child. They are emotionally spent but staying strong and positive for their little boy, WE can help them get through this!!

The Blue Butterfly Institute is an organisation of dedicated volunteers working to heal the victims and survivors of Childhood sexual abuse and trauma. Personally, I cannot speak more highly of the people involved in this organisation. Their strength and inspirational determination to help others comes from real life experience. They are the most beautiful souls making a difference in the lives of people that have had their innocence stolen and lives deeply affected by the actions of evil perpetrators…I really want them to receive a truckload of money to enable them to continue and expand their online counselling and related services. You may know that 3 years ago this week, Mandy & I lost our restaurant Upstairs@Fred’s in a fire that started downstairs in another business. That was a great way to top off 2020…Bushfires, Covid, Plague of Locusts… Fred’s Fiery Finale!
I didn’t take it well and spiralled into a period of depression fuelled by alcohol and a deep sense of loss. It is only by the grace of God that I’m still here, sober 11 months now and with a whole new outlook on life.
For the first time the anniversary of the fire is a Celebration… A celebration of life, friends, family, community and letting go of the things that held me down and stopped me from healing and moving forward. Life is a gift and I want to do as much as I can to continuing helping others like I’ve done over the decades.
I’m writing to ask you to help my new business Cornerstone. A business where I’ve committed 100% of profit will be donated to charity. First, so you don’t call bullsh*t…I still haven’t had the final settlement of the insurance payout from Fred’s so there is a bit of money coming from there hopefully soon and (for those of you that don’t know) I took on a real job cleaning a local school at night… So, I have a wage to live off. You didn’t think I’d get my hands dirty, did you? Anyway that gives me the ability to put this business together with the sole aim in the first promotion running now to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and GIVE IT ALL AWAY to three main causes. We’ve also been given a time extension into 2024 so we can sell all the entries and make sure all the charities get the full amount we’ve budgeted.
