This Yom HaShoah we remember Alex Kleytman, a survivor of the The Holocaust whose life embodied resilience, love and courage.
Born in Ukraine, Alex survived unimaginable hardship, including years in Siberia, before building a new life in Australia with his wife Larisa. Together they raised a family, welcomed 11 grandchildren, and became part of the fabric of Sydney’s Jewish community.
Alex often said the happiest day of his life was arriving in Australia. He went on to work in civil engineering for 25 years, contributing to the construction of Sydney Olympic Stadium, while filling his life with theatre, dancing and joy.
On December 14, 2025, Alex’s life was tragically taken in the Bondi attack. In his final moments, he acted with extraordinary bravery, shielding his wife of 57 years and pushing her out of harm’s way.
A survivor. A builder. A husband. A grandfather. A hero.
May his memory be a blessing.
