If you always end up guessing where to start piping your swags… this little trick will make such a difference.

Before I pipe anything on the sides of a cake, I plan the spacing first.

I cut a circle of parchment paper the same size as the top of my cake (using the cake tin makes this really easy), fold it into 8 equal sections, and use those folds to create guide marks.

Then I gently press the bottom edge of a circle cutter into the buttercream to mark where each swag will sit.

Those tiny guide marks help your swags, shells, and garlands stay balanced and evenly spaced all the way around the cake.

It takes less than a minute, but it completely changes the finished look.

Save this for your next decorating session… and if you want to learn more vintage buttercream techniques, my eBook The Art of Vintage Buttercream Piping is currently on sale for a limited time. 💕

Comment the word “Vintage” and I’ll send you the details.

Today, I wanted to try something fun, so I tested some vintage piping on a mini two-tier cake.

I used some offcuts I had handy to make a rectangular cake. I wanted to try the multi-opening tip #89 to create 3 drip lines simultaneously, and let me tell you, I can’t wait to use it again on a bigger cake.

I did find it tricky to pipe on such a small area. It’s actually a bit harder than piping on a standard-size cake.

Have you tried piping on a teeny tiny cake? Let me know in the comments!

Spring has given me the inspiration to explore new combinations to create texture and contrast.

I’m looking to design something different to what I have done so far.
I used to dislike floral piping so much, just because I wasn’t good at it.

The more so practice the more familiar I feel with the technique. It is not my favourite piping activity but I think if si keep trying I might get there

Happy Monday 💛🧡🩷

If your vintage piping doesn’t look as clean as you imagined… it’s probably not because you lack talent. 💗

I know how frustrating it can be when you have the right piping tips, you’ve watched the tutorials and you know what you want your cake to look like…

…but the buttercream isn’t behaving the way you want it to.

The swags look uneven.
The frills don’t have the same definition.
The pressure changes halfway through.
And suddenly that beautiful vintage cake you had in your head looks very different on the turntable. 😅

I’ve been there too.

The thing is, vintage piping isn’t just about having the right piping tip.

It’s about understanding your buttercream consistency, controlling your pressure, knowing how to move your piping bag and developing the muscle memory to put it all together.

And once those things start to click, piping becomes SO much less intimidating. ✨

That’s exactly what I want to show you.

Join me this Monday, 31st August, and I’ll show you how. 💕

If you’re a hobby baker who wants to feel more confident with vintage piping, come join me.

It wasn’t always like that. 👀

In fact, at the beginning, sometimes my piping was sloppy, and other times I simply couldn’t get my pressure to stay constant.

I remember holding my breath for a few seconds while piping on the top of a cake because I was so afraid of messing it up. 😅

I knew what I wanted the piping to look like… but getting my hands to actually do it was another story.

Over time, I developed a process that I now put in place every single time before I start piping a vintage-style cake.

And that process changed the way I approach vintage piping.

It’s exactly what I’ll be showing you next Monday in my 20-Minute Vintage Buttercream Piping Class.

My goal is to help you feel more comfortable and confident with your piping, so you can create vintage cakes with ease and pleasure instead of fear. 🤍

Let me save you time… because I wish someone had told me this sooner.

When I first started piping on vintage cakes I thought the answer was simple:

Learn more techniques.
Try more nozzles.
Try another buttercream recipe.
Practise more.

But the more I learned, the more I realised that beautiful piping isn’t just about knowing what to pipe.

It’s about understanding how to pipe it.

Your pressure.
Your buttercream.
Your nozzle.
Your movement.

And how all those little things work together.

That’s what I’ve learned through years of piping vintage cakes — and it’s what I want to share with you.

I’m holding a 20-Minute Vintage Buttercream Piping Class next Monday to help you improve your vintage piping without making it feel overwhelming.

If you struggle with vintage piping, this is for you! 🤍

If your piping sometimes looks amazing… and other times makes you want to scrape the whole cake and start again 😂 — you’re not alone.

Beautiful vintage piping isn’t just about having the right nozzle.

It’s about buttercream consistency + pressure + technique + control.

And I’m going to show you how I approach it in my upcoming 20-Minute Vintage Buttercream Piping Class.

If you could learn to pipe ONE of these… which would you choose? 👀

A classic round?
A vintage cake heart?
A mi

I honestly don’t think I could choose! 😂

One of the things I love most about vintage cake decorating is how you can take the same basic piping techniques and create something completely different depending on the shape, size and design of the cake.

And that’s exactly what I want to help you understand.

It’s not just about knowing how to pipe a shell, a swag or a rosette.

It’s about learning how to control your piping, create definition and combine different techniques so your finished cake looks intentional and beautifully balanced.

I’m holding my 20-Minute Vintage Buttercream Piping Class next Monday, where I’ll be sharing my techniques and tips to help you build more confidence, precision and control when piping vintage-style cakes.
